ST CATHERINE’S ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -Researchers are feeling a bit more hopeful this winter as more critically endangered right whales travel to the Georgia and Florida coasts to deliver babies.
The 7th right whale mother-calf pair of the season were sighted off our coast on Valentine’s Day.
The Sea to Shore Alliance aerial survey team spotted the 7th right whale calf among bottlenose dolphins off St. Catherine’s Island about 35 miles south of Savannah in Liberty County.
The mother is no strangers to whale experts. Her name is “Pico”, and she was first seen in 2002, making her at least 17 years old.
They say this is her second calf, her last calf was born in 2011.
While researchers say they are excited to have seven calf’s, they want to see more than 16 calves this season to signal that the population is growing.
